If you’re having trouble opening or using your Speech Boat materials, these quick tips usually solve the issue.

Most problems are related to unzipping files and long file names on Windows. Follow the steps below to get everything working smoothly so you can enjoy your new materials!

How to Download and Open Your Files

Most Speech Boat resources are downloaded as ZIP files. A ZIP file is simply a folder that contains one or more files compressed together.

To access your materials, you might need to extract (unzip) the folder.

To unzip a file on Windows

  1. Locate the ZIP file in your Downloads folder.
  2. Right-click the ZIP file.
  3. Click Extract All.
  4. Click Extract.
  5. Open the new folder that appears.

Your materials will be inside that folder.

To unzip a file on Mac

  1. Locate the ZIP file in your Downloads folder.
  2. Double-click the ZIP file.
  3. A new folder will automatically appear with the same name.
  4. Open that folder to access your files.

Problem: Windows Says the File Name Is Too Long

Some versions of Windows cannot unzip files if the file name or folder path is too long. This can happen occasionally with digital resources.

Quick Fix

  1. Right-click the ZIP file.
  2. Click Rename.
  3. Shorten the file name (for example: home_program_R.zip)
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Try opening or extracting the file again.

Once the name is shorter, Windows should allow the file to unzip normally.

Problem: The File Won’t Open

Make sure the file has been unzipped first. Files cannot be used while they are still inside the ZIP folder.

After extracting the folder, open the files from the new extracted folder.

Problem: The File isn’t Displaying Properly

Some files are designed to be opened in PowerPoint.

If the file opens in a preview window, browser, or Google Slides, some features may not work correctly. Download the file to your computer and open it directly in Microsoft PowerPoint.

Printing Tips

For the best printing results:

  • Open the file in PowerPoint or PDF format
  • Print at 100% scale
  • Make sure “Fit to Page” is turned off if margins appear incorrect

Different printers and printer drivers may use slightly different settings, so the exact options may vary depending on your printer model.

If the page does not print as expected, you may need to adjust the print settings slightly. For example, you might try:

  • Changing the scale percentage (e.g., 95-105%)
  • Turning Fit to Page on or off
  • Adjusting your printer margins

A small adjustment to the scale or layout settings usually resolves most printing issues.
